I have the honour to report that upon the re-

commendation of the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade I have

sanctioned provisionally and subject to your approval the ap-

pointment of Sergeant William Robertson of the Hong-Kong Po-

lice Force to be Assistant Engineer in the Fire Brigade with

effect from the 1st. January next at a salary of $90 a month

with exchange compensation thereon, in succession to Mr. T. Camp-

bell deceased.

In accordance with the ruling contained in your

despatch No.193 of the 3rd. August, 1896, the privileges of ex-

change compensation and pension are attached to this office.

I request your formal sanction of Sergeant Ro-

bertson's appointment.
